surreal art
Surreal art? questions :I?
I have an assignment over the summer and I need to do a graphite drawing of either a fantasy or Surreal based picture…
I haven’t been too familiar with surrealism 
but the painting of the melting clocks I know is one demostration
can someone explain what Surrealism is trying to express?
is it supposed to be things that make no sense?
and If my ideas was of a Gorilla with a robotic arm repairing something in his workshop (portraying him as a human) what category would that fall under?
what if I suddenly changed the background to giant floating bananas? would that fit Surrealism?
please tell me all you know about surrealism, some exapmles might help, thanks

well I got the gorilla with the robot arm..but the question is, what should it be doing?
another was a man looking from his hot airballong and seeing a few humpback whales flying in the sky
but the perspective is too hard

Surrealism is what you make it. It includes juxtaposition and oddly placed items. Not so much crazy backgrounds but normal setting with imaginative creatures or happenings. The dogs playing poker or even work by MC Escher. “Crazy Stairs” or the drawing of the eye with the skull in it.
Check out MC Escher for ideas im sure that is what your professor is looking for. He is very surreal. The definition of surreal is: pertaining to, or characteristic of surrealism; surrealistic, or having the disorienting, hallucinatory quality of a dream; unreal; fantastic: surreal complexities of the bureaucracy.
Keep that in mind…
